Traditional Design Style

Traditional Homes, Timeless Presence

Many people love the timeless appeal of traditional home decor. This style of decorating is still widely regarded as one of the most sought after styles. Warm and inviting, traditional homes blend understated elegance with grand design, often combining yesteryear with the luxury of today.

To help you make the most of this style, consider the following:

Color
The colors you choose in your home decor will set the stage for the room's mood and feel. There is much variety in the color palette that embraces the traditional feel. Creamy yellows, almonds, peaches and muted greens are common. Perhaps most well known is the colonial blue. For those preferring a richer, more luxurious look, jeweled tone colors with accents of gold and silver will deliver.

Style Tips

  • Consider antiques. The use of antiques and antique reproductions is key to creating the traditional look.
  • Mix and Match. When choosing your fabrics and textures, choose items that complement each other but do not necessarily match. Damask fabrics are often a good choice because of their blending of the sheen and muted parts of a pattern. This blending of complementary patterns and textures is a signature style of the Traditional look.
  • Accessories complete the look. Consider using still life oil paintings in a gilded frame. Pairs, such as matching vases or picture frames, lend to the traditional feel. To further the look, consider a crystal chandelier.
  • Remember the detail. Fine woodworking is a hallmark of the Traditional look. The details matter -  even the very small ones. This lends toward the creation of the rich and elegant look.
  • Pillows add softness. On their own, the brass and wood pieces often used in traditional decorating would be harsh. It's the addition of fabric that blends this style so nicely. Pillows are a perfect complement to almost any room. A few nicely placed throw pillows will transform an otherwise sterile room.

Recommended Window Treatments
Don't forget your windows when decorating your home. The window treatments you choose should support and enhance your decorating style. For a traditional home style, start by considering
